Tinnitus can be constant

Powerful Tinnitus Therapies You Probably Aren’t Using

It is estimated that 15% of the U.S. population, or roughly 50 million people, experience some form of tinnitus. There are various causes for the perceived buzzing, chirping, hissing, or ringing in the ear. However, nearly 90% of tinnitus cases are accompanied by underlying hearing loss. Other tinnitus causes include earwax impaction, underlying medical conditions, as well as certain medications or combination of medicines. If you are unsure if you have tinnitus, or if you would like further counseling on tinnitus treatment, keep reading.

If you have not yet seen a doctor about your hearing loss or tinnitus, please do. There are options, treatments, and therapies available that may help you to cope with this frustrating condition. By seeing a doctor, you will be able to (in most cases) identify the root cause of your tinnitus, allowing you to seek treatment accordingly. Standard tests for tinnitus include a range of hearing test and other related examinations. Additionally, some tests and exercises may be done to rule out causes other than noise induced hearing loss.

Once a cause for your tinnitus has been determined, your focus should then turn toward utilizing specific therapies, activities, and treatments to reduce the severity of your tinnitus. There are a variety of tinnitus relief therapies that can be used to help combat your symptoms. One of the more common treatments used is known as TAT, or Tinnitus Activities Treatment. This therapy is focused on uniquely counseling each person, tailoring the exercises and activities specifically to that person’s tinnitus symptoms. Through this treatment, the patient is evaluated in 4 areas that are affected by their tinnitus. These areas include sleep, hearing, emotions, and concentration. Therapists spend time working with the patient to improve in these areas in hopes of reducing the effects of their tinnitus. Other types of therapy used to help alleviate the symptoms of tinnitus include cognitive behavioral therapy, tinnitus retraining therapy, and sound therapy. These are all designed to help the patient learn to live with tinnitus by finding ways to decrease the severity of the symptoms and improve the patients’ quality of life. There are many interesting ways in which cognitive exercise can retrain the brain to make the tinnitus noise less noticeable to the patient.
